The Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation (abbreviated as Common Criteria or CC) is an international standard (ISO/IEC 15408) for computer security certification. Common Criteria certifications are awarded by the National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP) is a U.S. Government initiative by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Security Agency (NSA). To achieve an EAL level within the Common Criteria framework, the computer system must meet specific assurance requirements. Most of these requirements involve design documentation, design analysis, functional testing, and penetration testing. The EAL number assigned to a certified system indicates that the system completed all requirements for that level.
